Who was Granny Glasgow?
The Centre is named after Louisa Mary Glasgow (nee MaGuire), (more commonly known as Granny Glasgow) as a tribute to an outstanding woman who was a midwife in the Gascoyne in the early 1900's.
Louisa Mary MaGuire was born in Perth in 1855 and according to some records she was orphaned at 12 years of age, and was subsequently cared for by the staff at the Colonial Hospital (now Royal Perth Hospital).
At 15, Mary started her nursing training. She later married a Policeman, Edward Walker, and went with him to York, and then to several Police Stations in the Gascoyne.
Louisa raised 6 children and spent much time alone as her husband was away on duty. Following the early unexpected death of her husband, Louisa stayed in the Carnarvon district and took up Midwifery to support her young family. Some time later, Louisa married Thomas Glasgow.
Within a 500 mile radius of Carnarvon, Louisa was affectionatley known as 'Granny Glasgow'. By the time she was 76 years old, she had delivered over 700 babies in 37 years.
In her later years, Granny returned to Perth and then moved to Wagin where she died in 1944, aged 89 years.
